Mazatlan Living Email I Received

Here is a wonderful email I received from Dave who is living in Mazatlan…

Hola Barbie,

I have been living in Mazatlan for about 8 months now and I am  living in Playa Sur in el centro. The city is very beautiful and has much to offer an American retiree.

The delicious fresh fruit and vegetables at very  inexpensive prices are a bonus. I often shop at Fruiteria Emma in the Juarez colonia for amazing prices.

Difficult for me are the lack of some common American foods (grits). As many different ways as they have here for elota (corn) they do not have grits. A giant Sams club and a new Costco across the street from Sams will have many gourmet products and some American foods.

I use satellite radio (Sirius) for stock market, news, sports and NPR. The signal is excellent here. They will merge with XM radio in the next few months for even more options. I brought with me nearly 300 DVDS of US movies as the Mexico DVDS are area 4 (not compatable with US area 1 DVD players).

The local newspaper “Noroeste” is excellent at 8 pesos a copy, but you need to be able to read Mexican. I say Mexican because it is not Spanish. It uses Aztec words like cacahuate (peanut) guajalote (turkey) elote (corn) ejote (green beans) Guadalupe (lupita) achote (savory sauce) guajillo, molcalete, etc. Also the level of slang words is huge and only the locals understand the slang.

Voy a casarme con Angelica en Noviembre en Club Nautica, cerca del Faro (Translcated: I will be marrying Angelica in November at Club Nautica by the lighthouse). Buena suerte amiga (good luck, friend)!Sincerely,
Dave

Barbie

I have been to Mazatlan and it is indeed beautiful. I want to move to Mexico next year. but want to stay closer to the border near San Deigo - I heard there are some commuities there, do you have any info on that? Sincerely, Rod

FROM BARBIE: Hi Rod, Yes, there are communities nearer the border - that’s not at all what Dick and I were looking for - and on the Baja? The storms are not for us. Sorry, not much I can give you on this question. Barbie

Dear Barbie, My question about how much american money would it take to have a nice life in Mazatlan. I know that would depend on lifestyle too but around about how much to rent a nice place, food, elect…etc…I have one child 12yrs old and really am considering moving there…People try to tell me that a woman with a child can’t live in Mazatlan that it takes a lot of money I was there last December and I just loved it…Thanks so much for your site I love it..and your book…Judy

FROM BARBIE: Dear Judy - So much depends as you say on your lifestyle. Also your financial circumstances. Is your car paid for? Is your home paid for, or are you renting with a nice savings account? Just a really rough estimate - you can life well on $2,000/mo. People are doing it for less, but, with a 12 year old, you probably would want to put her in a private school? Maybe reconsider waiting until she graduates high school, then make the move? A woman with a child certainly could live in Maz - but, try rethinking this and maybe postpone a little while. When Dick and I made the choice that we wanted to choose Maz, we were retiring - different case - unless you have that nice savings put back. Barbie

Excellent post. It’s always great to know there are people who have moved on their dreams and are living the good life in Mexico.

I think this email shows that it’s really easy to adapt and make a postive move. Again, very good article. I like the email/commentary feedback format.

I am also considering it and wondered is your book available in hard copy?

Hi Barbie! My wife and I are planning a trip to Mazatlan in January, but will also be traveling and checking out other cities in Mexico, such as Puerto Vallarta and Tepic. I was wondering if you visited other areas in Mexico before you decided on Mazatlan. If so, what made you choose Mazatlan? Also, what is the weather like there in the months of November through April? Thanks for all the informative information on your website!

FROM BARBIE: November through April? Wonderful weather!! The Best!! When Dick and I started contemplating retirement, medical facilities were on the top of our list - that’s why, after a few years of research and study, we choose Mazatlan. Goodness, it’s a long story! The complete story is in my book “Retire In Luxury“. Main difference between then (when we first started looking ) and now is the medical situation has only gotten better.

Hi, Barbie: We’ve been living in Puerto Vallarta for 10 years now. We have left England behind and have two lovely properties here. It’s the charm of Mexico and the people that makes it so magical and sprital.
